The AccommodationThe cottage is situated in a small terrace of former fishermens' cottages. It faces the village green and is a few yards from the fishing inlet. It enjoys splendid views across the Gironde estuary to the Medoc. The accommodation consists of 3 bedrooms upstairs (2 double, 1 with hand basin and 1 single/ small double) ; downstairs a small kitchen, large living / dining room, bathroom and separate WC. There is a further downstairs room which contains twin beds. There is heating in all the main rooms for low season use. The village green faces the property and the guests may use the BBQ provided for relaxing meals on the green. The village council has kindly provided bench type picnic tables to further enhance this facility. Next to the green there is the 'social centre' of the village - the boules court. Because the property does not have an enclosed garden and the stairs are quite steep we do not feel that it is suitable for children under 5. The VillageSt Seurin is a quiet village on the picturesque "green road"
which links the small towns and villages along the Gironde estuary. The coast road is littered with small restaurants which who specialise in moules, wine and atmosphere. Once a busy sturgeon (caviar) fishing centre, only one or two fishing boats use the narrow inlet and canal to the Gironde . In summer it is busy with small pleasure craft. The village shop stocks most needs. In the neighbouring village of Chenac there are municipal tennis courts (arrangements to hire these can be made in St. Seurin). There is an outdoor swimming pool at Gemozac (10 miles), and Barzan Plage (4 miles) . The nearest bathing beach is at Meschers (Approx. 8 miles). Within a 20 minute drive are numerous restaurants of all types, many offering excellent value fixed price menus. Some of our favourites include: 'The Auberge' at Les Monards and 'Le Port' and 'La Rive' situated in the pretty harbour at Mortagne. A trip to Talmont to wander through the beautiful streets is highly recommended
The Area. The Charente Maritime region boasts a mild climate (consistently 7 degrees warmer than S. England) and splendid sandy beaches at Royan (15 Miles) and St. Georges de Didonne (10 Miles). Royan is a lively holiday town with a superb daily food market with a wealth of restaurants. Just outside the Royan there is La Palmyre zoo. The coast here can also be a mecca for surfers. Slightly further afield are the islands of Isle D'Oleron and Isle de Re and the historic port of La Rochelle. Less than 1 hour's drive to the S. is the city of Bordeaux and access to the Dordogne region. Closer at hand inland are Cognac, Jonzac and the Roman town of Saintes situated on the Charente river. Trips to the Cognac stills and to the local Cognac and Pineau producers are highly recommended. From Royan a car ferry operates to the famous Medoc wine producing region. From St Malo the journey to the cottage takes about 5 hours. Caen is about 7 or 8 hours away whilst Calais and Boulogne can be reached in a day. |
